Welcome to the Home Page of the Acoustics & Noise Research Group of the University of British Columbia.

This group is directed by Professor Murray Hodgson, who is in the School of Population & Public Health and the Department of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Sustainable Building Science Program. Acoustics is the study of sound, its generation, propagation, interaction with obstacles, and its effects on people. Noise is unwanted sound, whether in the workplace or in community environments. Our objective is to optimize acoustical environments to the benefit of the health, safety, education, well-being and comfort of people. The objective is being achieved by the theoretical and experimental study of sound and its effects, and by the development of prediction tools, measurement techniques, control measures and strategies.
